CHANCES 2nd Online Newsletter

Issue 2, February 2012
WHERE DO WE STAND NOW?
The CHANCES Project officially started on February 1st 2010. Now, almost two years later, significant progress has been made towards integrating complex data on health determinants and outcomes from the participating cohorts, and a number of research proposals have been generated which address important questions regarding the impact of diverse socioeconomic, lifestyle, environmental and nutritional factors on chronic diseases (e.g. cancer, cardiovascular diseases, fractures, cognitive decline), disability and mortality in older people.
So what is the
CHANCES really about?
What do we hope
to achieve?

Detailed information on the health status of ageing populations is essential for health, social and economic research and management.
Furthermore, repeated measurements over time are essential, to identify and quantify changes in health-related parameters, their determinants and confounders.
No single database in Europe fulfils all these characteristics and establishing such a cohort would represent a very expensive endeavour.
An alternative, more efficient approach was chosen by the CHANCES team: different existing cohorts from Europe and North America formed a consortium to provide new evidence on the health of ageing populations.
The CHANCES project aims at combining and integrating on-going studies in order to
produce evidence on ageing-related health characteristics and
determinants in Europe.
Four major groups of chronic conditions and disabilities will be studied: cancer; diabetes and cardiovascular diseases; fractures and osteoporosis; cognitive function and Alzheimer disease.
In addition to reaching its specific goals, the study will generate a unique resource for additional studies on health and its determinants in the elderly.
